Upcoming Weekend Retreat: The Bon Practice of the Five Elements


We are excited that Khenpo Ratsa Geshe Tenzin Dargye will return to Pittsburgh this December to teach the ancient and powerful Bon practice of the five elements. Khenpo will teach the meditation and visualization practice for each element and explain the role of the five elements for our human existence and their relationship with our body.

Upcoming Workshop: Being with Death and Dying Part III: The Bardo

This third Workshop on Being with Death and Dying will focus on the process of dying and the different stages of Bardo – the after-death experience. Tempa Lama will teach on the Bardo process and on contemplative practices that we can utilize to help and guide the dying person. Dr. Stan Perelman will provide applications to clinical practice. Dr. Jon Spiegel will present a guest lecture on cross-cultural perspectives on Bardo states.

This Workshop is for all who are interested in the dying process, in conscious dying, or who would like to offer psychological and spiritual assistance to the dying, including family members. It is for those who are ill and for anyone who would like to look deeply into the meaning of death and dying within the framework of a spiritual path. It is suited for medical professionals, psychologists, counselors, and social workers working with dying and illness.

Join us for an evening of conversation with Tempa Lama about his new books at the Shaler North Hills Library. Both books will be available for purchase and signing. Come early and view Tempa Lama’s exquisite Tibetan Thangka paintings and Tibetan Calligraphy displayed in the downstairs Art Gallery of the library.

However, our divided mind creates obstacles that do not allow us to abide in this experience. Tempa Lama will talk about overcoming these obstacles through a practice of gentleness and awareness. Join us to explore the law of cause and effect (or “karma”) with the 7th Kundol Rinpoche. “Karma” means action. Rinpoche will explain how most of our actions as unawakened beings remain as karmic traces in our consciousness. He will explain the effect of these karmic traces and how they can manifest in our lives. Understanding the law of cause and effect enables us to realize how we can manifest our awakened potential by renouncing unwholesome actions and consciously cultivating wholesome actions for the benefit of all beings.

Tonpa Shenrab, the awakened being who is the founder of the Tibetan Bon tradition, has explained in detail how we can gradually manifest as true compassionate beings. Any sentient being can become a compassionate being, and then a Buddha. This path relies on establishing our heart and mind into the understanding and realization of the 37 Aspects of Enlightenment – 37 awakened qualities that are essential as our support on this path.

Teaching and Benefit Dinner with His Holiness 33rd Gyalwa Menri Trizin on June 4, 2011



It it our great honor that His Holiness 33rd Gyalwa Menri Trizin, the abbot of Menri Monastery and spiritual head of the Bon tradition, will visit Pittsburgh for the first time in June 2011. Since he was a young boy, H.H. has dedicated his life to helping others and preserving the Bon tradition. His visit is a unique blessing and opportunity. We warmly invite you to join us for this precious opportunity to spend time with His Holiness and to celebrate his presence with us.

His Holiness will give teachings and a public blessing on the afternoon of Saturday June 4 in Pittsburgh, PA. A special Benefit Dinner with H.H. in support of the children, monks, and nuns of Menri Monastery will be held at 6:30 pm.

Vesak Celebration – Birthday, Enlightenment and Parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha

Everyone is welcome to join this multitraditional Buddhist event offered by the various Pittsburgh Buddhist organizations, this year honoring the 2,600th anniversary of Siddhartha Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment.

The event will include the ceremony “Bathing of the Baby Buddha”, chants, sutra recitation, devotional songs, and dharma words offered by the different Buddhist groups, and a meditation for world peace. Children’s activities are offered by the Pittsburgh Shambhala Group.

At 6:30pm everyone is invited to reconvene for the ceremony of releasing water into the three rivers with prayers for world peace. This is a free event; donations to the Buddhist Society of Pittsburgh are welcome. You are welcome to bring your friends and family.

Tempa Lama will give Dharma talk and Olmo Ling will offer the chant for peace and prosperity. We will practice this together at the weekly Tuesday and Saturday meditations prior to the Vesak event. If you would like to join us, you can listen to the chant here.

Thrul Khor: Tibetan Bon Dzogchen Yoga, Part II

Prerequisite: To participate you must have attended the Thrul Khor Tibetan Bon Dzogchen Yoga, Part I, or have previously attended teachings with Tempa Lama and intend to complete the Thrul Khor Worshop series. Thank you for your cooperation.

Join us for this Weekend Workshop on Tibetan Dzogchen Yoga, called Thrul Khor – the magical wheel or wheel of miracle. Tempa Lama will teach and give instructions from the Dzogchen Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyud.

Meditation Instructors’ Training

This Workshop is for those who wish to become a meditation instructor to help others. It is intended for people who have practiced meditation for a while.

The objective of this Workshop is to train those who are interested in volunteering in the Olmo Ling Compassionate Outreach program, including the Olmo Ling Prison Project and the Olmo Ling Death and Dying project. It is also generally for all who would like to be able to offer meditation instructions to help others. At the same time, this Retreat is an opportunity to deepen your own meditation practice by reflecting deeply on the Bon instructions for Calm Abiding Meditation and its relationship with Insight Meditation.

The teachings will focus on Calm Abiding Meditation according to the Tibetan Bon tradition. Calm Abiding Meditation provides a foundation for all other types of meditation. Tempa Lama will give detailed instructions on Calm Abiding Meditation and how we can use it to stabilize our mind and feelings.

All registrants must fill out an application to be accepted into this training.

This healing practice and the blessing of Tonpa Shenrab restore the power and qualities of our energy. This practice and teaching is for all who are ill or in need of healing.

Special Tuesday evening talk with 7th Kundol Rinpoche

H.E. Kundol Rinpoche is visiting for a few days. He will give a special Dharma talk on Tuesday January 4 at 7pm at our temple (1101 Greenfield Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15217). Rinpoche will talk about how the recognition of the impermanence of all phenomena can deepen our spiritual path and realization. This talk is open to all and offered free of charge. Donations will support Rinpoche’s monastery in India.

Kundrol Rinpoche is a renowned healer and psychic and the seventh reincarnation of the great Kundrol Jatson Nyingpo of Tibet. His warmth and compassion, his sense of humor and the unique qualities of his teachings have touched the lives of many beings.
