October 25-26, 2008:Bon Buddhistisches Retreat: Begegnung mit Krankheit und Tod / Being with Dying and Illness

with Tempa Dukte Lama, in English with German translation

Bodhicharya Hospice / Bodhicharya ambulantes Hospiz
Berlin, Germany

English description:
In this contemplative workshop we will explore teachings from the ancient Tibetan Bon tradition on being with dying and illness and the art of conscious dying. We will use meditation, exercises and dialogue to look deeply into the process of death and dying in our life and the lives of others. In the ‘Nine Successive Ways of Bon Teachings’ the 4th Way focuses on death, dying, and healing, and how to free ourselves from afflictive emotions that can cause sickness and make it difficult to live and die peacefully. These teachings encourage us to use death itself as a basic practice to develop strength within ourselves that helps us keep our heart and mind free from fear and judgment. Through looking into our own mortality and the nature of the dying process with an open, fearless mind we will have a deeper, more experiential understanding of the dying process and of how to provide support and guidance to the dying during the time preceding death, the moment of death, and the time following death.

This retreat is for those who are ill or in the process of dying, for caregivers, health professionals, and people working closely with dying people or animals. More generally, this retreat is for all who would like to look into the meaning of death and dying in their lives and learn more about letting go.

Deutsche Beschreibung:

Illness often has both physical and mental or emotional causes. Often, only the physical dimension of illness is treated, and we are left unaware of our own natural inner capacity to heal that can be accessed through a more holistic approach and through healing practices. In this retreat, we will explore healing through talk, practice, dialogue and exercises, and learn the Tibetan Bon healing practice of Sidpa Gyalmo. This practice is based in the open heart of compassion and equanimity. Through this practice we are recognizing and invoking the primordial healing wisdom that is inherent in all of us and that can help us to let go of stress and other factors in our mind that can cause physical and emotional pain or illness. The practice strengthens the flow of energy in our body and allows us to bring healing and renewal to our mind, emotions and body. This retreat is for everybody – for those with life-threatening illnesses, for caregivers, and for all those who want to deepen their relationship to healing and to physical and emotional wellbeing or to help others in their healing process.

Pre-registration is required. Please contact Jacqui Merrell at 610-446-6503 or at merrell.jacqui@gmail.com to register or if you have questions.

Retreat: The practice of self-compassion on the path of compassionate beings with Tempa Dukte Lama

A teaching based on the ‘Yen lag gyed pa Yung Drung sem pi chod pa la jug pi mDo’, the ‘Eight limbs of practice on the path of compassionate beings’

Saturday, Aug 23rd, 9:30am-5pm, Sun Aug 24th: 10am-12:30pm.

The practice of compassionate beings is to realize selflessness and to help others attain this realization. Becoming a compassionate being means becoming a Buddha. Yet, this is not an easy path. We may face obstacles and difficulties due to our conditioning, such as our expectations, self-judgment, fear, and attachment, or because of the demanding nature of the world we live in. These difficulties and obstacles distance us from our initial motivation to be compassionate. In this weekend retreat, we will explore these obstacles and how we unconsciously put pressure on ourselves. Tempa Lama will explain how we can use the Bon Sutra teaching on the ‘Eight Limbs of Antidote Practice’ to transform our insecurities. The teaching on the eight limbs of practice on the path of compassionate beings was first given by the Buddha Tonpa Shenrab to the community on the request of the compassionate being Tobu Bumsang.
Tempa Lama will guide us in meditating on these qualities with self-compassion, acceptance, and forgiveness. The practice of self-compassion is the highest practice on the path of a compassionate being, serving as a foundation for expressing our compassion boundlessly.

Location: Western Pennsylvania Family Center, 733 North Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

Series of talks/seminars on ‘The Ten Perfections’

Tempa Lama is continuing the series of weekly talks and discussions on ‘The Ten Perfections’ on Tuesdays, 7-8:15 pm.
Venue: 734 Melbourne St, Pittsburgh PA.
All are welcome.

The qualities of the awakened mind are infinite. On the other hand, their obscurations too can be numberless. This depends on the relative strength of our wholesome intention and our unwholesome conditioning. If we rely on good conduct and wholesome practices, the virtuous qualities of the awakened mind will arise, and these qualities will become the skillful means for clearing the obscurations that afflict us. We practice good conduct through actions of our three doors of body, speech, and mind that are truly beneficial both for others and ourselves. This is exemplified in the practice of the ten perfections, which are expressions of the awakened nature in our lives. The ten perfections are the practice of generosity, moral conduct of our three doors of body, speech, and mind, patience, effort, concentration and mindfulness, the wisdom of knowing, skillful means, aspiration and dedicational prayers, strength, and equanimity.

May-13  Mindful Concentration
May-20  Wisdom of Knowing
May-27  Skillful Means
June-03  Aspirational Prayers
June-17  Strength
